The Christmas Tree at Galle Face

sri_lankan_christmas_tree

The Christmas tree rises tall above Galle Face
A metallic monster that has no leaf
And delicateness, all wires around a lattice
Just to enter the Guinness Book
Of Freaks and Franken-makes.

And over near Nuwara Eliya
There are bevies of fireflies on a pine tree
Christmassy yet news unworthy, illuminated
In nature’s lanterns and bringing much
Needed joy to the estate workers
Fighting for a meaningful day-wage

And in the Daily Mirror on the 25th of December
There are pictures of smiling politicians
Gathered around a giant Christmas tree
Promising a promiseland
Of good governance and transparency

And all the while you can see
Bright lights around a Frankentree
That becomes to the eyes of the faithless
As decorated as a white elephant
On a bridge to nowhere

Selling her glittering ivory
To a poor man’s opium dream
